Jim was originally from the northeast, a small farming village north of Kylamm. Late in the orc wars that plague the area still, his family was set upon by orcs and killed in a raid. His own little sister was raised as a ghoul by one of the orc shamen, which left an irreversible hatred in his mind for the evil magics used by the opponents of the Bangalore Dwarves native to that area and their seemingly endless war against the Barranka tribe of orcs and their allies. After being captured, Jim was sold off as a child to a group of slavers who traded him for goods or more slaves along the western coast of the northeast peninsula, in the Sea of Fog. It wasn't until a few years ago that he was freed.
As Nirnfi R Bindlestiff grew his crime empire as well as his legitimate shipping businesses and other ventures, the gnome's agents inevitably fell afoul of these slavers as they tried to grow their business west to the rest of the continent. In one of these clashes, a young bard named Vauss found Jim among a group of other slaves, and took him under his wing.
Nirn was one of the first friendly faces Vauss introduced him to, and Nirn ensured him that they would help him get whatever kind of vengeance he required. Still a young man, Jim quickly learned the usefulness of being reared under the care of the Gnomish godfather of crime in the northeast, and applied himself to refine his mind about whatever he could that would help other families and children keep from the horrible fate he had suffered as a child. Jim applied himself to necromancy, a field of study he felt strangely ignored by the other spellcasters fighting against the Barranka orcs and their allies. What better way to fight the leaders of the orc war bands than to understand exactly what, and how, they can use their mystical powers?
Nirn left Jim under Vauss' capable tutelage. Though Jim fairly well ignored many of the more thief-focused lessons the bard could teach him, the young man became a quick student of languages, history, lore and the darker magics that Vauss and the other wizards working for Nirn had in their libraries.
When we meet him, Jim is played by Jon, having just lost his third character. As a change of pace, Jon has decided to make Jim a good-aligned character and play someone significantly less reckless than his previous characters. He is kind, charitable, and Jon threw out a line none of us expected in his first session, "Sharing is caring," as he is open with his magical knowledge with anyone else who is willing to share (namely Horace).
